Greetings from the Ellison Lab!

This spring has been a busy one, but with planting and transplanting of field trials complete, it is time to provide an update on how things are going and look ahead to our upcoming Hemp Research Field Day on August 21st!

Take a look below at a few of the hemp production trials being conducted by UW-Madison at the Arlington Agricultural Research Center!  To learn more about our research and see updates from our field trials throughout the season, follow us on SeedLinked (@EllisonLab)!

Industrial Hemp Grain/Fiber Variety Trials and Feral Hemp Evaluation Nursery

  • Evaluate relative performance of commercial hemp cultivars and feral hemp collections
  • 33 Cultivars/Accessions (Grain/Fiber/Dual)
  • Planted on May 27th
  • Evaluated for: establishment/vigor, flowering dates, harvest dates, yields, etc.
  • PI: Phillip Alberti, Jillian McGee, and Shelby Ellison

May 27th                            June 3rd                               June 10th                          June 17th

High Cannabinoid Hemp x Cover Crop x N Rate Interaction Study

  • Evaluate impact of cover crops and fertilizer rates on hemp production
  • Cover vs No Cover, Fertilizer vs No Fertilizer
  • PI: Grace Connelly

Borer Pest Resistance Hemp Cultivar Trial

  • Evaluate relative performance of commercial hemp cultivars with regards to pest population dynamics and damage.
  • PI: Dr. Christelle Guedot and Sophie Perry

Cultivar Check Program

  • Evaluate relative performance of commercial hemp cultivars in conjunction with grower-cooperators across the region
  • PI: Phillip Alberti

For all high cannabinoid hemp experiments, transplants established on May 9th and transplanted June 6th-11th.
